Did you know that:
nearly one in four Kenyan children under five experience stunted growth

— a sign not just of poor nutrition, but of lost potential? Imagine little Patricia, a bright-eyed seven-year-old from Limuru, who struggles to keep up in class because her body and brain aren’t getting what they need to thrive. Sadly, Patricia's story is shared by thousands of children across Kenya, facing health challenges that affect their ability to learn, grow, and dream big.
This is the reality Kianda Foundation is determined to change. We believe every child deserves a chance to succeed, and that journey begins with good health.
Why Children’s Health Is the Foundation of Learning
Malnutrition, frequent illness, and poor hygiene don’t just affect a child’s body—they hinder concentration, cognitive development, and school attendance.
Consider this:
The Kenya Demographic and Health Survey 2022 reports over 25% of children under five are stunted (KDHS 2022).
Illnesses like malaria and respiratory infections cause frequent absences.
The World Health Organization (WHO) highlights that
addressing these health issues can reduce absenteeism by up to 40%.
— almost half the crucial time lost for learning and social growth.
Kianda Foundation’s Children’s Health Program (CHEP): Healthcare Delivered Where It’s Needed Most
At the heart of our work is CHEP — the Children’s Health Program — providing essential medical care directly in schools, especially for families who cannot afford regular healthcare.
Our dedicated team from Kimlea Clinic visits schools on fixed days to offer:

Annual health check-ups
Deworming at least three times a year
Vitamins and supplements to boost nutrition
Food support for malnourished children, with family follow-ups for severe cases
Treatment and diagnostic tests as required
CHEP isn’t just a health initiative—it’s a lifeline that keeps children healthy during their formative years, laying a strong foundation for their futures.
Real Impact: CHEP’s Reach in Limuru

To date, CHEP has supported 3,299 children across several schools. Common issues include:
Skin infections (45%)
Eye problems (40%)
Dental caries (65%)
Some children face more severe challenges such as psychological trauma or chronic illnesses like sickle cell disease, requiring referrals to specialized care.
For example,
at Limuru Mission Primary School, one student recently underwent corrective surgery after years of untreated injury, made possible by CHEP’s intervention.
Stories like these show the power of accessible healthcare in changing lives.
How You Can Make a Difference
You don’t have to be a healthcare professional to help:
Encourage regular health check-ups in your community
Promote hygiene practices like handwashing and clean water access
Support programs like CHEP that provide medical care and nutrition
Advocate for improved school healthcare facilities
A donation of just €50 covers the medical care of one child for ten years—balancing simple check-ups to complex treatments.
