Building Skills, One Move at a Time | TUNU-CHESS Program

Updated: Jun 5

This past week has been an important one for the girls in our TUNU-CHESS program. At Kimlea Girls Technical Training Centre, we hosted 40 students from Kibubuti and Umoja schools for a focused training session — and their progress was clear from the start.

They came in well-prepared, confidently identifying chess pieces and explaining how they move. The highlight of the day was a mini chess tournament that allowed them to apply what they’ve learned in real games. They practiced key concepts like checkmate, stalemate, and pawn promotion — not just as theory, but through experience.

More than learning the rules, the girls built important life skills: focus, patience, decision-making, and resilience. They learned how to stay calm under pressure, plan ahead, and adapt when things didn’t go as expected. These are skills that will help them far beyond the chessboard.

Vortex Chess Tournament: A Step Forward

Later in the week, Kibubuti Primary School hosted the Vortex Chess Tournament, bringing together students from Raini, Umoja, Kianda, Limuru Mission, and Kibubuti schools.

After a joint coaching session, Kibubuti and Umoja girls teamed up and took part in the competition. It was a strong showing of talent and effort. The girls demonstrated teamwork, strategy, and determination.

The tournament also showed us what’s needed next: more coaching for Umoja and Kibubuti to get ready for the regional qualifiers in July. With consistent training, these students are on track to achieve even more.

Why Chess Matters

Chess sharpens the mind, improves memory and focus, and teaches strategy — but it also builds confidence. Many of the girls in our program are learning how to think critically, manage challenges, and make smart decisions — all through a game that’s accessible and rewarding.

Thank You for Making This Possible

The TUNU-CHESS program, supported by Kianda Foundation and generous partners, continues to open new opportunities for girls across Limuru. Your support is helping them grow not just as players, but as learners and future leaders.

We look forward to the next session, and we’re preparing for an exciting season ahead.
