CHEP: Supporting Healthier Futures in Tea-Growing Communities

At Kianda Foundation, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to grow, learn and thrive. However, for many children in tea-growing communities, access to basic healthcare and nutritional support can remain a challenge. This is why the Children’s Health Programme (CHEP) continues to play such an important role in supporting the wellbeing of children and their families.

As we reflect on the progress made during the first half of 2026, we are proud to share the impact CHEP has continued to make in the communities we serve.

Between May and July 2026, CHEP reached a total of 1,254 children across two schools:

  • Umoja Primary School – 588 children reached in May 2026

  • Kibubuti Primary School – 666 children reached in June 2026

Together, these children received access to important health interventions and support designed to promote their wellbeing and help them remain healthy and ready to learn.

Behind every number is a child whose health matters, a family that receives much-needed support and a community that is strengthened through improved access to healthcare.

Why CHEP Matters

For children, good health is closely connected to education. A child who is healthy is better able to attend school consistently, concentrate in class and participate fully in learning and everyday life.

CHEP helps address some of the health challenges that can prevent children from reaching their full potential. Through school-based health interventions, the programme brings essential support closer to children, ensuring that they can receive care within the communities where they live and learn.

This support is particularly important in tea-growing communities, where families often work hard to provide for their households and access to healthcare may be limited by distance, cost or other challenges. By reaching children directly through their schools, CHEP helps reduce some of these barriers and brings vital health services closer to families.

Creating Healthier Communities, One Child at a Time

The impact of CHEP extends beyond the individual child. When children's health is supported, families are better equipped to focus on their livelihoods, and schools benefit from healthier and more engaged learners.

In tea-growing communities, where the wellbeing of families is closely connected to the strength and stability of the wider community, investing in children's health is an investment in the future.

A healthier child has a better opportunity to learn. A child who stays in school has a stronger foundation for the future. And when children are given the support they need to thrive, entire communities benefit.

Reaching 1,254 children in just two schools is an important milestone in our journey, but there is still more work to be done.

As CHEP continues its work throughout 2026, we remain committed to reaching more children, supporting healthier school communities and ensuring that children in tea-growing communities have access to the care and support they need to thrive.

Every child reached is a reminder of why this work matters.

Because when we invest in the health of a child, we are not only supporting their wellbeing today—we are helping build a healthier, stronger and more hopeful future for generations to come.
