Did you know that Kianda School’s remarkable journey started with only 38 students in 1977? Founded by Kianda Foundation, this school was born from a vision to create a unique learning environment where staff and parents collaboratively nurture each student’s potential. Today, Kianda School has over 900 students and consistently ranks among Kenya’s top 10 schools in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), with an impressive average score of 9.2. This achievement is a direct reflection of Kianda Foundation’s commitment to transforming lives through education.
The Roots of Kianda School
Kianda School’s story is deeply intertwined with that of Kianda College, Africa’s first
multiracial college, established by Kianda Foundation. Many alumnae of Kianda College, including Naomi Waiyaki, expressed a desire for a secondary school where their daughters could benefit from the same nurturing and values-driven education they had received. Inspired by this vision, Kianda College’s founder, Miss Olga Marlin, consulted Monsignor Escriva, who encouraged her to bring the dream to life.
On January 9, 1977, Kianda School opened its doors to 38 students, among them Her Excellency Margaret Kenyatta, who would later become Kenya’s First Lady. This marked the start of a transformative journey towards academic excellence, character development, and community engagement.
Building a Holistic Education
Under the leadership of its founding Headmistress, Miss Mary Kibera, Kianda School became a nurturing ground for young women to thrive academically and personally. By blending academics with a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports, drama, and community service, Kianda School focuses on holistic growth and life skills. The school promotes collaboration and open communication, fostering a supportive community where every girl feels valued.
Kianda Foundation’s Vision for Future Leaders
Through Kianda School, Kianda Foundation has championed an educational approach that prepares young women to lead with confidence and purpose. From mentorship programs to leadership training, Kianda School empowers students to take on future challenges with resilience and integrity. Over 80% of Kianda graduates pursue higher education, often in fields such as medicine, law, and engineering.
Celebrating Kianda School’s Legacy
The partnership between Kianda Foundation and Kianda School underscores the foundation’s dedication to uplifting communities through education. From its early days to its current successes, Kianda School exemplifies how a vision rooted in purpose can create generational impact. As the school continues to grow, so does the influence of Kianda Foundation’s founding mission: to provide quality and personalized education to women and girls, developing all aspects of each individual to the full.
